Elon Reeve Musk or Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on June 28, 1971. He grew up in the final decades of Apartheid as the oldest of three siblings with a tremendous family name.

British-Canadian model, Maye Musk, and Errol Musk, a British electrical engineer born in South Africa, were his parents. Elon moved to South Africa with his father after his parents divorced in 1980. In 1990, he enrolled at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, for his undergraduate studies. He later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a double major in Physics and Economics.

He holds an honorary doctorate in Design from the Art Center College of Design and an honorary doctorate in Aerospace Engineering from the ‘University of Surrey, in addition to bachelor’s degrees in physics and economics.

To pursue a PhD in applied physics at Stanford, he moved to California, but he left after only a few days to pursue his own interests in technology and entrepreneurship. Later that year, he collaborated with his brother, Kimball Musk, to create ‘Zip2,’ a software company that provided services to high-end newspaper clients such as ‘The New York Times and ‘The Chicago Tribune.’

Following the successful sale of Zip2 to Compaq in 1999, Musk launched his next venture, an online financial service called ‘X.com.’ Shortly after acquiring a money transfer service called ‘PayPal’ through a merger, the company began to focus solely on developing this internet payment service. Because of the success of ‘PayPal,’ Musk sold his stock in the company to ‘eBay’ for $165 million.

In 2002, he invested millions of dollars in his third company, ‘Space Exploration Technologies,‘ or simply ‘SpaceX.’ Within seven years, the company had created the ‘Falcon’ line of space launch vehicles and the Dragon line of multi-purpose spacecraft, and it was making history with its privately funded innovation.
