John Mars Early Life

John Mars

On October 15, 1935, John Franklyn Mars was born. He is the son of American candy firm Mars, Incorporated founders Audrey Ruth (Meyer) and Forrest Mars, Sr., and the grandson of Frank C. Mars. Mars attended Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, and Yale University.

When his father refused to spend money on a comfortable life in order to establish his business, John learned lessons about the economy living with food and money. With the passage of time, he formed the practice of working for whatever he desired in his life, with no access to fashionable clothes, automobiles, or other privileges. Their father in order to turn them into useful citizens rather than playboys imposed this hard lifestyle on John and his brother, Forrest Mars Junior.

John Mars Career

John Mars

When John grew up and became capable of earning a living, his hard work in childhood was rewarded. After graduating from Yale, John joined the United States Army, where he served for two years, 1956-1958. Following this, he joined his family business with his father’s permission; his first task was to establish a pet food firm in Australia, distant from his home.

Despite the fact that the task was difficult for an entry-level businessperson to crack, he travelled to Australia on purpose and began working on his assignment. He advanced steadily in his business, learning many lessons along the way, and now oversees the firm’s pet food operations around the world.

Another problem occurred when Hershey became the main company in America in 1988, relegating Mars to second place for the first time in the industry’s history. During this time, John worked alongside his brother, Forrest Jr., to restore the company’s position, for which he bought Ethel M Chocolates, a company founded by their father after he turned over Mars to them. This action extended their firm’s operations and, together with several other smart initiatives, returned the company to its respected position in 1991.

Taking on every challenge that came his way, John turned into a successful businessman and is widely regarded as Mars’ major brain and decision-maker. Furthermore, he is credited with pushing the company toward automation, which allowed it to increase output and, as a result, expand to other countries outside of the United States. Thus, the training that began in childhood propelled John Mars to great success.

In March 2015, Queen Elizabeth II was awarded an honorary knighthood on him at Windsor Castle.
