John Madden Early Life
On April 10th, 1936, John Madden was born in Austin, Minnesota and his father relocated the family to California so that he could look for employment prospects and work as an auto mechanic. John first enrolled in a famous Catholic institute but later transferred to other school, Jefferson High School. Madden was exceptional as an important member of school’s football squad throughout his high school. John was a young athlete with talent and versatility who displayed promise in both offensive and defensive roles and he also demonstrated his skill as a baseball player.

In 1954, the year John Madden received his high school diploma, he began playing football at the College of San Mateo. He played football for the school for one season before relocating to the University of Oregon to pursue pre-law studies. He then transferred to California Polytechnic State University, where he joined the Mustangs’ offense and defense. While completing a BS in Education, he also played catcher for the college baseball team. In 1961, he went on to earn an MA in Education.
It appeared for a moment that Madden might be playing in the NFL after the Philadelphia Eagles selected him in the 21st round of the 1958 draft. His knee (not the one that had already been hurt) was wounded, ending his career, and that was that.
Madden began serving as an assistant coach at Allan Hancock College in 1960. He was then employed at San Diego State as an assistant defensive coach until 1966, a year in which the team was among the best in the country. John Madden attained the record for being the NFL’s youngest head coach at the time when Davis left the squad.
