Personal Life
He was born on 24 August 1948 in Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpe, France. His parents were French composer Maurice Jarre and his mother a French resistance member Francette Pajot. His mother was a concentration camp survivor. He attended Lycée Michelet in Lyon. Jarre’s grandfather was an oboe player and an engineer. He was introduced to music by accompanying his mother to nightclubs. He met various big stars in clubs mainly John Coltrane and Archie Shepp. Jean Michel was influenced by street performers and other artists such as Pierre Schaeffer. Pierre is known as the inventor of musique concrete. Jean was also influenced by Pierre Soulages. He got his knowledge & interest in musical instruments from the Saint-Ouen flea market, where his mother worked. Jean Michel first saw Boris Vian’s trumpet violin. He got married three times. First, he was married to Da Projects actress Flore Guillard from 1975 to 1977. His second wife was English actress Charlotte Rampling from 1978 to 1998. Lastly, he was married to French actress Anne Parillaud from 2005 until their divorce in 2010.
Career
Jarre released his debut studio album in 1972 named Deserted Palace. His second album was released in the following year named Les Granges Brûlées. His next two albums Oxygene and Equinoxe started his journey to fame. Oxygene reached #1 in French on the music chart whereas remained at #2 on the UK music chart. Oxygene sold around 12 million album copies at that time leading to international fame. Equinoxe reached #1 on the French chart in 1978. In addition to that, his album Rendez-Vous was ranked #1 in France in 1986. Two of his albums: Chronologie in 1993 and En attendant Cousteau in 1990 were both #2 in France. He plays different musical instruments: piano, organ, accordion, guitar, synthesizer, bass, and more. He is known for mainly these genres of music: electronic, new age, and ambient. In 2002, he released his first vocal album called Métamorphoses. By 2004, he sold approximately 80 million copies of his albums.
