Joseph William Tessitore (born January 1, 1971) is an ABC and ESPN sportscaster. Tessitore also served as the play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football in 2018 and 2019, with former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten in 2018 and commentator Booger McFarland in 2018 and 2019.

Joe Tessitore Early Career

Tessitore began his broadcasting career with KXAS-TV, an NBC station in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He temporarily worked at WRGB (CBS) in Albany, New York in 1994 before moving to WFSB (CBS) in Hartford, Connecticut in 1995. In 1997, Tessitore took over as the major sports anchor.

Tessitore began calling boxing on ESPN in February 2002 as part of Tuesday Night Fights and Friday Night Fights. He was soon featured on ESPN College Football and College Basketball programs. In addition to Monday Night Football, he was the primary broadcaster for college basketball’s Super Tuesday on ESPN, as well as the SEC Basketball Tournament, which he co-hosted with Dick Vitale and Sean Farnham. Tessitore is widely recognized as one of the network’s most versatile announcers.

Tessitore has worked as a documentary producer for ESPN’s award-winning 30 for 30 series. He was the executive producer of the ESPN Film Roll Tide, War Eagle in 2011. He worked as a consultant producer for ESPN’s 30 for 30 with Bo Jackson in 2012.

Tessitore was the primary play-by-play announcer for ESPN’s Saturday Night College Football Primetime Game as well as the College Football Playoff. He and his primetime team were recognized for their efforts, including being named the 2016 Broadcast Team of the Year by Sports Illustrated.

He formerly worked as a play-by-play announcer for ESPN’s Thursday Night Football and hosted SEC Nation alongside Tim Tebow and Paul Finebaum. Tessitore has worked as a play-by-play announcer for the BCS Championship on ESPN 3D and is the host of ESPN’s Megacast Homer’s version of College Football’s National Championship Games.

Tessitore has been recognized for his efforts on the air. Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated has twice named him a finalist for Sports Media Person of the Year. He collected an Eclipse Award on behalf of his ESPN production crew for their Belmont Stakes telecast on ABC on January 18, 2010. Tessitore received the renowned Sam Taub award for Broadcast Excellence from the Boxing Writers of America on June 4, 2010. Tessitore was inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame in 2010.

Tessitore earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Boston College’s Carroll School of Management in 1993. He finished his high school education at Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, New York. Tessitore is a director for the Connecticut Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and a member of the National Italian American Foundation. Tessitore established the annual Sportscasters’ SuperBall to benefit CF Research. John, his son, is a kicker at Boston College.
