Rick and his brother John were reared on a farm close to Palmer Springs, Virginia, by their parents, Mary and Joseph. At the age of 14, Rick started drag racing with a 1931 Chevrolet he had constructed, and at the age of 16, he took first place in the Chrysler-Plymouth Troubleshooting Competition. Though he first pondered a career in baseball while attending Park View High School in Virginia, Hendrick eventually participated in a co-op work-study program run by Westinghouse Electric Company and North Carolina State University.

Rick Career

Hendrick started drag racing at the age of 14 in a 1931 Chevrolet he built himself. Hendrick won the Virginia section of the Chrysler-Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest two years later when he was 16 years old. The contest was a two-part examination that included a written exam and a timed hands-on diagnosis and repair of fake automotive issues.

With Mike Leith, Hendrick established a little used automobile lot. Hendrick, who was 23 years old, was persuaded to become the general sales manager of the business by Leith, a seasoned new-car dealer. He liquidated his holdings in 1976 to buy a franchise in Bennettsville, South Carolina. After selling 100,000 cars and providing services for 1.5 million more, his business generated more than US$3.5 billion in revenue in 2009, making it the sixth-largest dealership in the country. Hendrick serves as the company’s chairman as well.

Hendrick participated in two races in the Winston Cup Series in 1987 and 1988, finishing 33rd and 15th, respectively. He also made one start each in the Craftsman Truck Series and the Busch Series. He had also worked in the pits for the Flying 11 that Ray Hendrick, a separate person, had driven in the 1960s. In order to help the National Marrow Donor Program, Hendrick launched the Hendrick Marrow Program in 1997. This non-profit collaborates with the Be The Match Foundation.
