John McAfee Early Life
David McAfee was born on September 18, 1945 on a US Army base in Cinderford, England. His father was an American soldier stationed at the facility. His mother was British. McAfee was raised in the American city of Salem, Virginia. He has claimed multiple times that he felt equally at home in Britain and America. When McAfee was fifteen years old, his violent alcoholic father shot himself in the head. He was raised by a single mother. He studied at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1967. In 2008, he received an honorary Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree from the university.

Following his undergraduate graduation, McAfee started working at NASA’s Institute for Space Studies from 1968 to 1970. After leaving NASA, he worked as an operating system architect at Xerox and subsequently as a software designer at Univac. McAfee transitioned to consulting in 1978 when he became a software consultant for the Computer Sciences Corporation. He then worked for two years, from 1980 to 1982, with the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton. In the 1980s, when he was working for Lockheed, McAfee started focusing on creating software to fight viruses. After getting a copy of the Brain computer virus, he particularly started developing antivirus software. In 1987, McAfee left his job and started his own computer virus company, McAfee Associates. Two years after McAfee Associates went public; he became disinterested in the software industry. He sold every share of the company for $100 million. Network Associates was created in 1997 by the merging of McAfee Associates and Network General. Seven years later, Network Associates became McAfee, Inc. Intel acquired McAfee Inc. in August 2010. Up until January 2014, McAfee kept its own branding distinct from that of Intel. In 2014, McAfee-related products started being marketed under the name Intel Security. The division formerly known as McAfee, Inc. was separated from Intel in 2017. McAfee lost millions of dollars due to a string of poor investments, including a significant wager on Lehman Brothers’ bonds. John was forced to sell his real estate and other assets for pennies on the dollar.
