He was born on September 2, 1959 in New York, NY. Nick graduated with a degree in philosophy from the University of Washington. He then started his career by working for the family-run Pacific Coast Feather Company. He is still the co-chair and CEO of the company.

Nick started off his career by working for his family owned business. Later, he co-founded the well-known West Coast business Museum Quality Framing Company in the 1980s. Since then, it has expanded to 60 locations and produces custom frames for unframed art. Hanauer was the first non-family investor in Amazon.com in the 1990s. He also served as an adviser to the board until 2000. Hanauer established the advertising company aQuantive in 1997. He presided over the board until Microsoft bought the business in 2007 for more than $6 billion. In 1998, Hanauer launched Gear.com, an online retailer of sporting products. He remained there until 2000. Hanauer cofounded Second Avenue Partners, a venture financing firm with headquarters in Seattle, in the same year 2000. He was appointed vice chairman of the board of directors of Seattle-based company, Marchex, in October 2007. It is a mobile advertising analytics company that intends to link online behavior with offline action. LEV is a charity organization with the mission of enhancing public education. Hanauer is the LEV’s co-president at the moment.
