Pelé Early Life
Pelé was born on 23 October 1940, and he was named after the American inventor Thomas Edison. He grew up in poverty and used to work in tea shops for extra money. He didn’t have money to buy a football, so he used a sock filled with newspaper. Pelé played in many amateur games and was a leader of Bauru Athletic Club juniors. He started playing with an indoor football team and his team won many championships. He credits futsal for his fast thinking on the pitch.
Pelé Club Career
In 1956, he signed a contract with Santos FC, and he was said to be the future superstar. In 1957, he was at the starting place and became the top scorer in the league. After some months he was called by the Brazilian national team. In 1961, he was given the name of “official national treasure”. His first major title was in 1958. In 1960, he scored 33 goals for the betterment of his team and then he scored 47 goals to help Santos stay in the tournament. The team won Tacca Brasil.
Santos won the 1962 international Cup and the Copa Libertadores cup. In 1974 he retired from the Brazilian club. In 1975, he played for Cosmos and many of the other stars followed him there. One week before the Lebanese civil war he played a friendly game. He bought Cosmos to the 1977 Soccer bowl. He led New York Cosmos to their second Soccer Bowl.

Pelé’s first international match was in July 1957, but he lost it. He scored a hat trick against Team France and became the youngest to do so. In 1958, he became the youngest player in the World Cup at just the age of 17. Brazil won the World Cup and Pelé won Silver Ball.
In 1959, he played South American Championship and was the player of the tournament. Brazil came second. In 1962, Pelé was voted the best player in the world and World Cup Brazil stood second.
