Phil Rosenthal was born in Queens, New York and was raised in New City, New York. During his time in High school, Rosenthal became an active member of school’s drama club called ‘Cue N’ Curtain’ as well as in theatre. He graduated from Clarkstown North in 1977. He later attended the Hofstra University and graduated from the university in 1981.

Rosenthal had a short-lived career as an actor in 1980s. However, he eventually focused his career to production. He started working as a writer and producer of TV shows such as Coach and Baby Talk. He collaborated with Craig T. Nelson on ‘Coach’. His most famous and well-loved work is ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’. The show was a commercial success and was Rosenthal’s longest running show. Everybody Loves Raymond was a sitcom which was co-produced by Rosenthal and Ray Romano. The project was based on Romano’s comedy material. Rosenthal also collaborated with his wife Monica Horan. Monica Horan is an actress and played the role of Amy MacDougall-Barone who was the girlfriend of Robert Barone in the series. The series was ended after the joined decision of Rosenthal and Romano. Rosenthal also served as writer and co-writer for almost twenty-one episodes of the show.

His acting credit includes projects such as Spanglish (developed by James L. Brook), The Simpsons Movie, Curb Your Enthusiasm, 30 Rock, and The TV set (Jake Kasdan’s Feature).

Rosenthal also became an author after he published his book ‘You’re Lucky You’re Funny: How Life Becomes a Sitcom’. The book was published in 2006 and included accounts of his life following the success of Everybody Loves Raymond.

He also served as a director for Bill Clinton’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner video. He co-wrote a 9/11 telethon titled ‘America: A Tribute to Heroes’. The telethon was published on all four networks and was awarded a Peabody Award. He also received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding writing. Rosenthal also served as a writer and director for Sony Picture’s documentary short-film Exporting Raymond.

Rosenthal started a food and travel documentary-series on PBS titled ‘I’ll Have What Phil’s Having’. The show was centred on Rosenthal travelling to various locations around the world to explore food. The series was reimagined and released on Netflix under the title ‘Somebody Feed Phil’.
