Born in Mount Vernon, New York, She is step-sister to American film producer and editor Marion Segal Freed.

Wanting to be a writer, Susan sold her first script called ‘Then Came Bronson’ an adventure drama that was created in 1969. Following that she started writing for various shows including Love, American Style, All in the Family, and The Partridge Family. She also served as a writer for the TV adaptation of Barefoot in the Park, which was a Broadway play by Neil Simon. In the 1970s, she wrote an episode for a series called ‘Maude’. The episode was centered around abortion and Harris was awarded a Humanitas Prize for her writing.
