Born in Mount Vernon, New York, She is step-sister to American film producer and editor Marion Segal Freed.

Wanting to be a writer, Susan sold her first script called ‘Then Came Bronson’ an adventure drama that was created in 1969. Following that she started writing for various shows including Love, American Style, All in the Family, and The Partridge Family. She also served as a writer for the TV adaptation of Barefoot in the Park, which was a Broadway play by Neil Simon. In the 1970s, she wrote an episode for a series called ‘Maude’. The episode was centered around abortion and Harris was awarded a Humanitas Prize for her writing.

In the years to come, She wrote various TV shows including Fay, Soap, Benson, It Takes Two, Empty Nest, Nurses, Good and Evil, The Golden Palace, and The Secret Lives of Men, to name a few. But the most acclaimed and popular show that Susan Harris created and wrote was called ‘The Golden Girls. The Golden Girls is an American sitcom that aired in 1985 and yet it is still one of the most beloved shows of all time. The show had 180 episodes and was aired for seven seasons. It ended in 1992. The show revolved around four older women who were sharing a home in Miami, Florida.
