Vijay Singh Early Life and Amateur Career
Vijay was not from a rich family. He grew up playing snooker, cricket, football, and rugby. He liked playing golf, but the golf balls were too expensive, so he used coconuts instead. His favorite was Tom Weiskopf and his swing which he used in his early career.
Vijay Singh Professional Career
Vijay turned professional on 1982. After turning professional he won the 1984 Malaysian PGA Championship. He was suspended from Asia Golf Circuit because it was alleged that he lowered his scores, but he denied it. After investigation, it was proved true and then he was banned from the Asian PGA Tour play.
He felt that he was treated badly, and he got a job at Keningau Club in Sabah. During this period, he just saved money so that he can re-enter the tournaments. In 1988, he was sponsored, and this was a trip to Africa. He then went to Nigerian Open and at the end, he entered European Tour Qualifying School.
In 1989, Vijay won his first title at Volvo Open Championship. He had four winnings in that year. In 1990, he won European Tour and in 1992 he won twice. He won several tournaments in Asia and Africa. He entered PGA Tour in 1993 and won the Buick Classic. In 1995, he won Buick Classic again after recovering from his back and neck problems. In 1997, he won Memorial Tournament and Buick Open.
In 1998, Vijay played 70-66-67-68 and earned his first Major title. He won The Masters in 2000. In 2001, he didn’t win any tournaments but was fourth on the money list. In 2002, he won Shell Houston Open. Year 2003 was the most successful year for him as he won 4 tournaments.
