George Vincent Gilligan Jr. was brought into the world in Richmond, Virginia on February 10, 1967. Vince was raised in a middle-class family in Farmville with a younger brother until his parents split when he was seven years old. Gilligan was reared as a Catholic but subsequently declared himself an agnostic.

Vince got acquainted with future film editor Angus Wall in high school. He and his younger brother used to collaborate on science fiction films. Vince had his first taste of success when he won a film competition. Jackie Wall (Angus’ mother) had a great influence on Gilligan during his early years, and she pushed both sons to pursue careers in the arts.

Gilligan was a fan of the program and submitted a script to Fox that became the episode “Soft Light” in the second season. He went on to write 29 more episodes, as well as serve as co-executive producer on 44, executive producer on 40, co-producer on 24, and supervising producer on 20. He was also a co-creator and executive producer of The X-Files spin-off series The Lone Gunmen. The program had just one season of 13 episodes.
