American mixed martial artist Aljamain Antoine Sterling is the current UFC Bantamweight Champion and competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) Bantamweight division. Aljamain Sterling Early Life
Cleveland and Sophie Sterling, who are both from Jamaica, welcomed Aljamain Sterling into the world in Uniondale, New York on 31 July 1989. Sterling began wrestling at Uniondale High School in 2004 as a way to avoid the pervasive gang culture that some of his brothers had joined. Sterling chose to enroll in Morrisville State College after realizing that he couldn’t catch up with the grades required to move up to Division I.
After meeting Jon Jones and working out for the wrestling team while attending Morrisville, Sterling became interested in MMA. Sterling switched to Cortland after his first year and went on to win two NCAA Division III All-American awards. With a bachelor’s degree in physical education, Sterling left Cortland.
Aljamain Sterling Early Career
Sterling won by submission to begin his amateur career in 2009. With a 2-0 record in his professional debut, Sterling was given the opportunity to challenge for the ROC Bantamweight Championship. He would later go on to win the title by narrowly defeating Claudio Ledesma. Against Evan Chmieleski at featherweight, Sterling made his CFFC debut. Two seconds remained in the first round when he defeated his opponent by TKO.

At UFC 170, Sterling was supposed to replace an injured Bryan Caraway and make his UFC debut against Lucas Martins. However, Martins later sustained an injury as well, and Cody Gibson, a fellow UFC rookie, took his place. The bout was decided unanimously in favor of Sterling. At UFC Fight Night 45 on July 16, 2014, Sterling faced Hugo Viana in his second UFC outing.
At UFC 267, a rematch with Yan was planned for October 30, 2021. Sterling, however, pulled out of the competition on September 25 because of ongoing neck problems brought on by the operation. The fight was originally slated to take place on March 5, 2022, at UFC 272, but it was moved to UFC 273 on April 9. The title was successfully defended by Sterling after a close contest. On October 22, 2022, at UFC 280, Sterling and T.J. Dillashaw are slated to square off.
