On November 7, 1996, Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor was born in the Auckland neighborhood of Takapuna, New Zealand. She was raised in the Devonport and Bayswater neighborhoods on Auckland’s North Shore. She joined a theatrical club at age five, where she honed her public speaking abilities. Lorde credited her mother, who pushed her to read a variety of genres, as an artistic influence. Her mother made her take the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities to gauge her IQ after receiving a recommendation from a teacher.
